Question:

This week's Car Care Quiz is especially for those of you who rely on your cars to get you around in this cold snowy weather. If the time comes that you find yourself stuck in snow, then—true or false?—the best way to rock your car out is to quickly shift from low gear to reverse at high speed.

Answer:

False. Gentle movements to and fro are much easier on your car—and more effective—than severe rocking. (And don't spin those tires too fast.) Repeated shifting from low to reverse can overheat and automotive transmission and damage universal joints. If this technique doesn't produce any result, you may have to call a tow truck.

Even though you're especially careful driving during this weather, take a few precautionary measures before you go out. Keep extra blankets, coats and flashlights in your car in case you get stranded: if you're traveling a ling distance, take along extra food. Make sure your jumper cables are in good shape and in the car.
